Multiplex Fourier Spectroscopy in Reconstructing the Concentration Profile of the Near-Electrode Layer

V. A. Kotenev

Received December 29, 2004

Abstract — A method of spectral multiplexing for a nondestructive monitoring of the refraction-index distribution throughout the volume of a nonuniform near-electrode layer at a metal–solution interface is considered. As shown, the amplitude-modulation Fourier spectroscopy of the reflection from a nonuniform near-surface layer, which has a low-gradient profile of complex refraction index and a weak dispersion of optical parameters, allows one to embody the multiplex principle of measurements and reproduce the refractive-index distribution and, hence, the concentration distribution over the depth of the near-electrode layer, based on either interference patterns or an additional Fourier transform.

Abstract — The aim of this experimental study was to minimize the input of lead and tin ions and fluoboric acid into the waste water from the electroplating line, where the printed circuit boards and other parts of electronic devices are plated with tin-lead alloy. For this purpose, after unloading the parts from the plating tank, they were rinsed in the reclaim tank, from which the aforementioned ions were removed with a reclaim immersed elec-trochemical module (IEM).

Abstract — Potentiodynamic polarization was used to investigate the effect of acrolein (formed from propargyl alcohol via acid-induced isomerization) on the electrode processes at Armco iron in hydrochloric and sulfuric acid solutions. In solutions of mineral acids, acrolein is ineffective and inferior to propargyl alcohol in the inhibition of iron corrosion. It was found that acrolein can be cathodically reduced during the corrosion process, whereas the isomerization of propargyl alcohol into acrolein should reduce the protective effect of the inhibitor.

Abstract — Contact exchange of iron(III) with aluminum metal is studied by using chronopotentiometry, voltammetry, and cyclic voltammetry. Some of its kinetic and other electrochemical characteristics are determined. The statement that the process proceeds in stages (which is proved by the use of methods of formal kinetics) is supported by cyclic voltammograms.

Abstract — Electrochemical behavior of a hydrogenized Cu30Ni alloy in 1 N NaOH solution was studied by using standard and cyclic voltammetry, chronocoulo-, ampero-, and potentiometry. Anodic polarization of the initial alloy results in the copper selective dissolution; that of the hydrogenized alloy, in the hydrogen selective ionization. The anodic current peak observed at E = –0.5 V in the cyclic voltammograms and anodic polarization curves of the hydrogenated alloy is caused by the hydrogen ionization. The peak is controlled by the hydrogen diffusion in the solid. The volume capacitance of the alloy in hydrogen significantly exceeds that of nickel. It is shown that the hydrogen ionization is practically reversible; unlike nickel, the alloy chronopotentiograms taken at i = const do not break up after a short initial potential arrest but descend, gradually as a result of ionizing the absorbed hydrogen.

Abstract — Corrosion-electrochemical behavior of tube stills of a 18–10 steel combined with the case component members from plain carbon steels in circulating water of petroleum refineries is investigated. It was ascertained that the reasons for accelerated corrosion of tube panels, as well as origination and development of pitting corrosion perforating the bundle tubes, are as follows: a high content of chlorine ions in the circulating water and its periodical acidification; the contact between the two highly different steels accepted when manufacturing the coolers; and precipitation of corrosion products on the inner surface of tubes during shutdowns of the process.

Abstract — The effect of the components of chemico-catalytic reduction solutions on the formation rate, composition, and structure characteristics of Ni–Mo–B-alloy coatings is studied. The chemical state of elements and the composition of the surface and bulk layers of the coating containing 11 to 22 wt % of molybdenum and 1.0wt % of boron are studied using XPS combined with layer-by-layer profile analysis. The alloys have crys-talline nanostructure stable at temperatures of up to 500°C. Molybdenum is incorporated into the coatings pref-erably in its completely reduced form, as a supersaturated solid solution in the nickel matrix. Yet at the same time, the deposits absorb a substantial amount of the absorbed intermediate products of the molybdate reduction to Mo(IV).

Abstract — The effect of electric conditions on the cathodic deposition of silver from pyrophosphase-ammonium electrolytes is studied. A pulse-current mode is shown to enhance cathodic polarization. This effect increases with an increase in the relative pulse duration. The advantages of nonsteady-state electrolysis for the improvement of the uniformity and structure of silver deposits formed on the inner surface of a cylindrical cathode are demonstrated.
